Meet the Elizabeth The Golden Age Cast

Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth)

Before seven-time Academy Award-nominated, Australian actress Cate Blanchett reprised her role as Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, she starred in Notes on a Scandal, the story of an art teacher arrested for having a romantic liaison with a 15-year old student. Blanchett snagged Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Oscar nominations for her performance in the critically acclaimed Richard Eyre film.

In 2004, Blanchett joined Leonardo DeCaprio as screen gem Audrey Hepburn in The Aviator for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2002 she transformed herself into slain Irish journalist Veronica Guerin in the film Chasing the Dragon: The Veronica Guerin Story, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama.

In 2003, Blanchett starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones in The Missing, a thriller directed by Ron Howard.

Blanchett also garnered Best Supporting Actress nominations for her 2001 performance as Galadriel, the elf queen, in the Peter Jackson blockbuster The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings. She reclaimed the role in 2002 for sequel Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. That year she also starred in Tom Tykwer’s Heaven.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age returns Blanchett to the role that made her a widely recognized and highly sought after actress. She first starred in the title role of Elizabeth in the 1998 Shekhar Kapur film, which also starred Golden Age co-star Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes.

Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton were named as artistic directors of Australia's Sydney Theatre Company in 2006.

Geoffrey Rush (Sir Francis Walsingham)

Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush is back as Elizabeth’s trusted advisor Sir Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

Prior to reprising his role as Sir Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Rush appeared as in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, reprising his role as Captain Barbossa, a role he has portrayed since the blockbuster franchise began with 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006.

Between filming Pirates, Rush starred in Steven Spielberg’s Munich in 2005 and in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Ned Kelly in 2004.

Rush’s other film credits include Mystery Man in which he portrayed Casanova; Quills for which he snagged an Oscar nomination; Les Miserable’s with Liam Niesson; The Tailor of Panama; Shakespeare in Love for which he earned his second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor; and in 1997’s Shine, which garnered Rush an Academy Award for Best Actor and a Golden Globe for Best Performance.

Clive Owen (Sir Walter Raleigh)

Elizabeth: The Golden Age’s Clive Owen received wide acclaim for his starring role in Mike Hodges' Croupier. Born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, Owen has a long list of credits that include the feature films Vroom, Close My Eyes, Century, The Rich Man's Wife, Bent and The Echo. He was seen most recently in the comedy Green Fingers and in Robert Altman's Gosford Park.

Prior to making hit films like Closer, Derailed and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Owen obtained starred in roles on both sides of the Atlantic including the series Chancer, Sharman, Split Second and the recent BBC hit Second Sight; and the TV movies Lorna Doone, Class of '61, The Magician, Nobody's Children, An Evening With Gary Lineker, The Return of the Native and Doomsday Gun.

While filming his role as Professor in the Universal Studios’ mega-hit The Bourne Identity, Owen began shooting a series of unique Internet-based Òmini-moviesÓ for BMWfilms.com and executive producer David Fincher, portraying a character that recurs in each film. These shorts were being directed by such filmmakers as Ang Lee, John Frankenheimer, Guy Ritchie and Wong Kar-Wai.
